Please note that attendance is required for the duration of the entire session to earn continuing legal education credit. In addition to professional mediators, the program will benefit professionals in supervisory or managerial roles.
Human resources professionals, corporate executives and sales professionals from a variety of industries have benefited from this program in the past. The objectives of the colloquium was to help conflict resolution specialists and others engage with, validate, and have empowering conversations with these individuals. We focused on cultural differences in conflict resolution during this interactive colloquium where we discussed the challenges to move from operating within a dominant cultural paradigm to a paradigm that focuses on needs of the parties involved.
Looking to enhance your skill and want to mediate child custody and visitation disputes? This interactive course includes lectures, discussions, demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and role plays. It covers Maryland laws on separation, divorce, annulment, child custody and visitation, and child and spousal support. Included are an introduction of family systems and child development theories and an overview of the emotional aspects of divorce and separation.
There will be a discussion on the relationships among custody, visitation, and child support. Students will be taught strategies for handling power imbalances, intimidation, the effects of domestic violence, and ending a mediation safely. Emphasis will be placed on writing good memoranda of understanding that meet the needs of the parents and children.
Prerequisite: Students must have completed a hour basic mediation course to enroll in this course. Boost your skill and learn how to mediate for marital property disputes. This course meets the requirements of the Maryland Rules of Procedures. The class is interactive and includes lectures, discussions, demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and role plays. It covers Maryland laws on separation and divorce, including spousal support, taxes, pensions, personal property, assets, and business valuations.
Emphasis will be placed on writing good memoranda of understanding that meet the needs of the participants. It is highly recommended that students also complete the Hour Child Access course before taking this course. Get your annual 2 hours of ethics and more!
During this 6-hour course, you will examine and discuss challenging ethics cases. You will also participate in hands-on agreement writing to practice and hone skills that are just as important at the end of the mediation as during mediation. Part of the day will focus on an in-depth look at dealing with intense emotions in the mediation room -- the parties' as well as your own. Be prepared for lively, participatory and thought provoking discussions.
Even if you took this course previously, you will find it challenging as the instructors will be using different exercises and scenarios. How many of us have taken mediation training, gotten to the end, and realized that we just did not have much time to really get into the nitty-gritty of agreement writing? Participants will flesh out the who, what, where, when, and how of the agreement. They will learn how to do effective reality testing, examine temporary measures, and help parties craft agreements that last.
The workshop will feature plenty of exercises, role plays, and mock-agreement writing. Conflict and Communication: Strategies for Skill Enhancement. Our outreach promotes and educates residents to a diverse set of non litigated solutions that can provide real benefits to the psyches of those in conflict, as well as to their wallets! Our programs for professionals, including a nationally-recognized certification process, ensure that parties to conflict will have deeply knowledgeable professionals to guide them to creative, value-driven and mutual agreements.

David Lewis. Esteemed Dispute Resolution Colleagues,. This will be an exciting holiday season, since as an organization we have several new initiatives to look forward to in the coming New Year. MCDR will be launching its eagerly anticipating Mentorship and Mediator development program under the leadership of Stirling Philips and the newly constituted Mentorship Committee.
We are still actively seeking more volunteer mentors and committee members - so please get in touch with a member of the board if you are able to give some of your professional time to working with this exciting new program for emerging mediators. Additionally, the MCDR Certification Committee has been very active this past year and has received some acclaim from participants for its development and successful piloting of a new Mediator Feedback program.
This new Mediator Feedback program, funded by a MACRO grant is suitable for providing valuable insights and peer perspectives to mediators at any stage in their career.
This program can uniquely provide valuable colleague feedback to both solo and co-mediation pairs. The Board expects that this program will be gradually scaled up and made generally available to all Maryland mediators starting in Kimberly Morton Cuthrell, Esq.

Thankfully, most Board members are continuing to serve in this new term so there is significant experience at the helm of MCDR. Consequently, I believe these are exciting times ahead for MCDR as the Board will be at full strength as it starts its new term.

Over the past year we have made significant strides in developing a mentoring program for mediators; I am both proud and humbled to serve as the first Chairman of the new Mentoring Program Committee.
I am also proud of our success, receiving a MACRO grant helping launch the Feedback Assessment program, offering individualized constructive feedback to mediators.
