Tray notifications cache windows 7
I believe step 2 is necessary not because of a feature problem with CCleaner, but rather because of the way Windows operates. It is my understanding the entries in the notification tray cache come from two values in the registry that CCleaner edits.
However, Windows recreates those values automatically on a reboot if you don't do step 2. This feature isn't available on Vista machines and I think I know why. Microsoft moved the registry key somewhere else, but I've tracked it down. I deleted what was in there and restarted explorer and that did the trick. Would be nice to see this fixed in future versions. You need to be a member in order to leave a comment.

An issue with removing unused notification area icons is they cannot be selectively removed and all have to be deleted at once.
One thing you do lose though is the custom setting for icons to be shown or hidden, so you will have to reconfigure the icon settings through the notification window.
The program is portable and not much more than KB in size with separate bit and bit versions. Just run the program and press the Clean button and it will go through the process of clearing the necessary registry entries. Then Explorer is restarted which you need to do to complete the removal. Although it says for Windows 7 in the title bar, the tool does work fine in Windows 10, just make sure to close any Explorer or Settings windows before running. Download Notification Area Cleaner.
In actual fact, one of the most popular system and junk cleaning tools of all time has an option built in to clear the notification area cache. You might miss it because the option is grayed out and not enabled by default. If you have CCleaner installed on your system, there will be no need to use anything else for the task. On checking the box a dialog will popup telling you Explorer needs to be restarted manually. Click Run Cleaner to clear the cache. Either kill and restart Explorer.
Download CCleaner. They are auto-detected by Windows and are never removed unless the user clears the cache manually. After a time, the cache will contain many obsolete software entries.
For each item in the list, you can select one of three behaviors. To change the behavior of an item, click on the dropdown list in the Behavior column for that item to select your choice. The "official" CCleaner Online Help for this feature can be found here and here.
The section for Tray Notifications Cache appears below. In Windows XP the System Tray the set of icons next to the clock in the bottom-right corner orders and hides items automatically for you. Whilst this is useful, it records a list of every program that has been run from the tray. Warning: This won't have any affect until you manually restart the explorer process from the Task Manager.
The message states "System tray cache will be reset, you need to restart the explorer. The Online Help and the warning message mention restarting explorer. What does that mean? It means that you will need to perform additional steps with the Windows Task Manager after using CCleaner, or the tray cache will not be cleared. Those steps will be outlined later in Part 2 of this tutorial. See the next question to learn what clearing the tray cache will do to your system.
What will clearing the Tray Notifications Cache do to my system? You will have to manually set the notifications again the way that you want them for each item in the list. Since the list is very short now, this should not take very long. If you follow the proper procedures to clear the cache, there should be no ill effects in Windows or any of your programs.
Close as many open programs as you can, including those on the Windows taskbar and the System Tray. If, however, you have a firewall suite that includes antivirus, you may wish to disable it for this procedure. This can prevent some error messages and will give you fewer running programs to worry about when you get to the Task Manager steps.
Go to the Advanced catagory, and place a check mark in the box for Tray Notifications Cache.
